Bathrooms are Complete and UsableWhat a week it's been down at the Center!
At the start of the week we had just had tile put up on the walls, and a quick paint coat thrown up. Now, after an amazing day of installation that went 9 1/2 hours, the partitions and handicap bars and fixtures are all in place for both bathrooms! We need a good cleaning, and we're good to go. That means that the big event Saturday, the Spaghetti Feed and Wine Tasting that the Center has sold all 200 tickets for, will go off with functioning bathrooms to accommodate everyone. HUGE thanks to our volunteers who made this happen! It has been a long and trying process to get this job completed, but it appears that at last the hard work and patience of the volunteers who have helped make this project happen is soon to be rewarded.
The AMA approved bathroom project, the largest undertaking since the Veterans Community Center was acquired by the organization, is nearing completion! Much work has been done to secure the walls of the main building to accommodate the sturdy framing for an addition such as this. Then securing donations of materials from thoughtful donors who believe in the mission of this wonderful Vet Center (which we'll name in detail on another post once this is totally complete), to building out the walls, floors and installation of a secure door to the exterior of the building. Then gratefully, the beginning of the finish work is being done. Tile has been added to flooring and partial walls in both Men's and Women's facilities, with grout just a few days ago. Lighting has been installed too. To accommodate our wheelchair or other handicapped guests, the lights are "automatic", which means they will turn on and off by themselves, triggered by movement into the space, and timed out if no movement is detected. So that way, nobody has to enter the space without light searching for a switch, and when the lights go out it saves energy and money. Here are the latest photos taken on 5/15/17, and partitions are due in this week, along with the all important plumbing to finish off the job before the big party this Saturday here at the Center. Thanks to all who have helped with this important project! Here's a flyer for the event. Reach out to Jeanne if you'd like to come! Come have some fun and enjoy the game with family, friends and fellow Vets!
The following is a post we just received on FB for our Veterans Golf Park page. Want to help this blossom! Hello!
My name is Darrell Allen. The reason for my inquiry is that I am a wounded warrior looking to start a non-profit golf organization with a specific aim. It is no hidden secret that many veterans suffer from PTSD/TBI, as well as drug and alcohol addictions. The families of these soldiers have also been impacted by these conditions. My objective is not only to help the soldier, but to be a support system to the families as well. To do so I would like to offer the most comprehensive, cutting edge, treatment of alcohol, drug abuse, PTSD/TBI, and counseling in the world. I believe that golf is the way to do that. Golf offers discipline and focus not only through its values, but also through its lessons and challenges that equate to everyday life outside of the golf course. Golf has helped me and continues to help aide me in maintaining my sobriety. When I got out of the US Army in 2010, I found myself in a downward spiral. I was addicted to painkillers and alcohol. My second marriage was another losing battle and came to an end. I hit rock bottom when I was informed I had successfully poisoned my liver and was on the road to death. During the beginning stages of my recovery, I decided to return to my roots and do the things that I found joy in doing before enlisting. Golf was one of the prevalent activities I had enjoyed as a young adult. As a result, golf wound up being the one activity that made my recovery a success. I believe that golf can do this for others as well. It is a fantastic tool, a focusing agent that can help other wounded warriors with the same ailments and emotional problems that can arise from careers such as ours. Since being sober for a total of 4 years from everything, I now aim to help veterans that find themselves in the same situation. I know that my story is not unique, however it is unfortunately common. I believe with the experience of my own and with the help of others we can make a difference in the veteran community. I compare the soldier to world level athletes in body, mind, and spirit, which is the driving force behind all of us. If I can make a difference in one soldier's life, I believe a chain reaction will make a ripple effect that will change lives worldwide. Any information and knowledge that you can pass down to me would be greatly appreciated. I hope that by sharing a mere snippet of my story with you, you can see the dedication and drive that is behind my request. Sincerely, Darrell Allen SPC.USA RET After months of preparation and planning, the new ADA approved bathroom project is underway! Not only that, but we're also pouring concrete to give Veterans and visitors access all the way around the property - even in a wheelchair. Thanks to all who are volunteering in this project!
Want to help a worthy cause, but aren't sure how? Check out the "Pumpkin Guts Challenge"! Veteran's Golf Park, with the Veteran's Community Center in Citrus Heights, has come up with a fun and creative way to help raise awareness and money for the Veterans in our area. We're in the final stages of a building upgrade allowing wheelchaired vets and other handicapped folks to access bathrooms and allow for us to jump into our programs full swing. This is a critical time and we MUST RAISE the necessary money to make this all happen! Check out the flyer below, and go to our special page on the website - PLEASE HELP and SPREAD THE WORD!!
Veterans Community Center, a Veterans Center founded and run by Veterans Golf Park founder Jim Rounsavell, attended and counselled veterans who attended the Veterans Picnic at Rusch Park today. Here are some photos of the activities! Thanks to all who attended and participated in this celebration of our finest! Lots of good programs were represented, and lots of good fellowship with soldiers recent and past. Thanks to all the vendors who provided food, drink and lots of goodies for the attendees. Great time!
The video below is a shared link from our friends at TheVeteransSite.com Blog Give it a listen - very inspirational! "Today marks the 6th anniversary of my second brain surgery and stroke. I am very grateful today for what I have. I would not trade it for anything. I am most grateful to my family and friends and everyone in my life who has stuck close by my side. This year I completed my B.S. in Computer Science and a 100 mile bike ride among other challenges. After my hospital stays the first year or so I slept so much of the day and was on so many medications I worked my way up to 270 lbs today I have worked down to about 210. Every day is a chance for me to be in better shape than the day prior. On Sunday, January 25, 2009 I received an early birthday present: a recumbent bike. Little did I know six years later I would be able to say: "Since January 1st 2014 I have ridden roughly 3,216 miles and climbed 84,934 ft (next year I hope to do more) Matt Cardoza, has been a blessing to our Veterans. We are so grateful tor the day he came to our Center. Thank you Matt for all the wonderful work you have done!

About VCCJames Newton Rounsavell was the Founder of Veterans Golf Park for Disabled Vets, dba Veterans Community Center. Jim was a life long golfer and began to realize that golf could help disabled vets with PTSD and TBI, two very degrading but all too common syndromes that affect our Vets. Archives
