A Soldier Reaches Out on Facebook

2/21/2016

The following is a post we just received on FB for our Veterans Golf Park page.  Want to help this blossom!

Hello!
My name is Darrell Allen.
The reason for my inquiry is that I am a wounded warrior looking to start a non-profit golf organization with a specific aim. It is no hidden secret that many veterans suffer from PTSD/TBI, as well as drug and alcohol addictions. The families of these soldiers have also been impacted by these conditions.
My objective is not only to help the soldier, but to be a support system to the families as well. To do so I would like to offer the most comprehensive, cutting edge, treatment of alcohol, drug abuse, PTSD/TBI, and counseling in the world. I believe that golf is the way to do that. Golf offers discipline and focus not only through its values, but also through its lessons and challenges that equate to everyday life outside of the golf course.
Golf has helped me and continues to help aide me in maintaining my sobriety. When I got out of the US Army in 2010, I found myself in a downward spiral. I was addicted to painkillers and alcohol. My second marriage was another losing battle and came to an end. I hit rock bottom when I was informed I had successfully poisoned my liver and was on the road to death.
During the beginning stages of my recovery, I decided to return to my roots and do the things that I found joy in doing before enlisting. Golf was one of the prevalent activities I had enjoyed as a young adult. As a result, golf wound up being the one activity that made my recovery a success. I believe that golf can do this for others as well. It is a fantastic tool, a focusing agent that can help other wounded warriors with the same ailments and emotional problems that can arise from careers such as ours.
Since being sober for a total of 4 years from everything, I now aim to help veterans that find themselves in the same situation. I know that my story is not unique, however it is unfortunately common. I believe with the experience of my own and with the help of others we can make a difference in the veteran community. I compare the soldier to world level athletes in body, mind, and spirit, which is the driving force behind all of us. If I can make a difference in one soldier's life, I believe a chain reaction will make a ripple effect that will change lives worldwide.
Any information and knowledge that you can pass down to me would be greatly appreciated. I hope that by sharing a mere snippet of my story with you, you can see the dedication and drive that is behind my request.

Sincerely,
Darrell Allen

After months of preparation and planning, the new ADA approved bathroom project is underway! Not only that, but we're also pouring concrete to give Veterans and visitors access all the way around the property - even in a wheelchair.  Thanks to all who are volunteering in this project!

    About VCC

James Newton Rounsavell is the Founder of Veterans Golf Park for Disabled Vets.  Jim was a life long golfer and began to realize that golf could help disabled vets with PTSD and TBI, two very degrading but all too common syndromes that affect our Vets.

Several years ago the charity got a heads up on the sale of the former Citrus Heights Community Center on Sylvan Road, and was able to acquire the property.  It has become the center of focus and attention for the Veterans here and that tradition continues with Jim's wife Jeanne after his passing.
